Andrea Burgay
Andrea Burgay is a visual artist, publisher, and curator. Originally from Syracuse, NY, she currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work transforms paper and print media through the lens of memory, emotion, and imagination. Through processes of accumulation and deconstruction, these materials are reconstructed and revived. The resulting works bear the markings of these visceral transformations, visually manifesting the passage of time and carrying elements of the past into the present. They encompass both the inevitable pain of loss and the potential for growth and renewal.
Her process mirrors natural cycles of creation, decay, and rebirth, which also drive Cut Me Up Magazine, Burgay’s ongoing collaborative publishing project of visual call-and-response that she founded and directs. Each issue presents a curated selection of original collage images that become raw material for artists to respond to by cutting, reconfiguring, and transforming them into new artworks.
Works from Cut Me Up have been featured in exhibitions such as Cut Me Up: Transitions at the Vassar College Art Library and RE-BOP! Obstructions & Disruptions at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago, IL. Burgay exhibits nationally and internationally, and her work is held in public and private collections worldwide.
